Fleetwood best placed to end American dominance of majors

Jul 16, 2018

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — Two rounds of 63, made eight months apart and on different sides of the Atlantic, are fuelling the belief that Tommy Fleetwood can end the American dominance of the majors at the British Open. The first came at the Dunhill Links Championship in October when he broke the course record at Carnoustie, where the world's oldest major will be staged this week. Then came another in the final round of the U.S. Open at Shinnecock Hills last month, which propelled him to within a stroke of eventual winner Brooks Koepka. Fleetwood, with his long, flowing hair and...

Spieth returns claret jug, faces tough task getting it back

Jul 16, 2018

CARNOUSTIE, Scotland — Jordan Spieth figured someone from the R&A would be waiting for him when he pulled into the parking lot at Carnoustie to take back the silver claret jug. Instead, he was part of a ceremony with enough pomp to drive home the point. His reign as British Open champion was over. "The traditions of the Open are very special," Spieth said, "even if you're on the wrong end of that one." This "tradition" is only a few years old, though typical of the august manner of this major, nothing was left to chance. Spieth was to arrive...

Serena Williams at No. 28 in WTA rankings, climbs 153 spots

Jul 16, 2018

LONDON — Serena Williams climbed 153 spots in the WTA rankings after her runner-up finish at Wimbledon, putting her back in the top 30. Williams is ranked 28th in the list published Monday. At Wimbledon, the former No. 1 was playing only her fourth tournament after returning from childbirth, but still reached the final before losing to Angelique Kerber of Germany. Kerber climbed six spots to No. 4, with Simona Halep holding onto the top ranking despite going out in the third round at the All England Club. Kevin Anderson climbed into the men's top 5 for the first time...

Fendrich on Tennis: Djokovic rejoins Federer, Nadal in Big 3

Jul 16, 2018

LONDON — What had gone from a Big 4 to a Big 2 is now back to a Big 3, with Novak Djokovic rejoining Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal at the top of men's tennis. Each has been written off at some point. And each has won a major tournament in 2018: Djokovic's title at Wimbledon on Sunday, Nadal's at the French Open in June, and Roger Federer's at the Australian Open in January. "It's amazing," Djokovic's coach Marian Vajda said, "that those three got back like this." Maybe the U.S. Open, which starts in 1½ months, will break the...

Joshua to fight Povetkin in London in September

Jul 16, 2018

LONDON — Anthony Joshua will defend his WBA, WBO and IBF heavyweight titles against Alexander Povetkin of Russia in London on Sept. 22. Joshua's promoter Eddie Hearn on Monday confirmed the fight, which will take place at Wembley Stadium. Povetkin is the mandatory challenger to the WBA title. The 28-year-old Joshua has been in training while negotiations with WBC champion Deontay Wilder stalled, but could yet face the American in April 2019. Joshua said in a statement: "Povetkin is a serious challenge that I will prepare meticulously for. He has serious pedigree and only a fool would underestimate what he...
