Although Hong Kong has one of the smallest horse populations in the world, it has positioned itself as global leader in thoroughbred racing. Begun in 1988, the Hong Kong Cup is a Group 1 flat horse race in Hong Kong which is open to thoroughbreds aged three years or older. For this year’s racing, 50 horses are selected, with local and international horse divided evenly, including nine Japan-based horses, eight horses with English connections, four from Ireland, two from France, and one each from Australia and Singapore.

Glorious Forever, the Archipenko full-siblings finished well down the field in the G2 Jockey Club Cup over the Sha Tin 2000 meters on 18th November prior to the barrier draw for the G1 Longines Hong Kong Cup. Its jockey, Silvestre de Sousa, dominated the race from start to finish with the four-year-old gelding, and completed the 2,000-metre course in just over two minutes and one second. The result came with French rider Christophe Lemaire finished second on Deirdre and Australian jockey Zac Purton finished third on Time Warp. This marked the first time Hong Kong-trained horses took the crown in all four of the Longines races,

“It is incredible.!” Michael Kwan, the owner of Glorious Forever said, “He has shown everyone how brutally good he can be. It is not just a race. It is a spirit, the spirit of Hong Kong and the spirit of horse lovers. You will never know until you are one of the crowd shouting for the race.”

BRIGHTON, England — A stoppage-time own goal handed Brighton a dramatic 3-2 comeback English Premier League win over Everton, which had been leading with 10 minutes to go on Saturday. Brighton led after 15 minutes through Pascal Gross' powerful free kick, but Everton responded when Richarlison's header went in off Adam Webster, who was credited with the own goal. Two minutes after coming off the bench, Dominic Calvert-Lewin gave Everton the lead with his fifth goal in his last five games. Everton looked close to earning its first away league win since March but let Brighton back into the contest...

Liverpool drops first points in 1-1 draw at Man United

Dec 7, 2019

MANCHESTER, England — Dropping points doesn't seem so frustrating this time for Manchester United. Even against Liverpool. While holding on to inflict Liverpool's first loss of the season was beyond this patched-up United squad, a 1-1 draw still ended the Premier League leader's perfect start on Sunday. It's a sign of United's fall from grace that frustrating its fiercest rival represents progress in the midst of the team's worst start for three decades. Adam Lallana's 85th minute tap-in for Liverpool, canceling out Marcus Rashford's first-half opener, meant United has now lost eight points from winning positions this campaign. But United...

Dec 7, 2019

LONDON — Tottenham's struggles in the Premier League showed no signs of ending as Spurs needed a late equalizer just to earn a 1-1 home draw against last-place Watford on Saturday. The debate around VAR will likely go on as well, after the video-replay system sparked more confusion and controversy on day when it had a direct impact on three games. Dele Alli's late equalizer for Tottenham was allowed to stand after a VAR check, despite the midfielder seemingly using his arm to control the ball before slotting home in the 86th minute. In addition, the big screens at Tottenham...

Arsenal 3rd in EPL as David Luiz scores 1st goal for Gunners

Dec 7, 2019

LONDON — David Luiz scored his first goal for Arsenal in a 1-0 win over Bournemouth on Sunday which lifted Unai Emery's side up to third in the Premier League. Luiz headed home off a corner from Nicolas Pepe with only nine minutes gone. It turned out to be the only goal of a game that lacked both chances and quality as the Cherries managed to keep in-form Arsenal striker Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang on the periphery. Arsenal has still lost just once this season in the league and now sits one point behind defending champions Manchester City. Aubameyang, crucial to Arsenal...
