Saracens beats Exeter 27-10, back as English rugby champion

LONDON — Saracens became English rugby champion for the third time in four years by beating titleholder Exeter 27-10 at Twickenham on Saturday.

U.S. international Chris Wyles scored two of Saracens' four tries in his final appearance before retirement after 10 years with the club, with No. 8 Billy Vunipola and Nathan Earle crossing for the others.

In a worry for watching England coach Eddie Jones ahead of the three-test tour of South Africa, Saracens flyhalf Owen Farrell was substituted in the second half because of an apparent calf injury and looked in discomfort as he came off.

Exeter, which finished top of the 22-game regular-season standings, could not withstand Saracens' superior pace and power that was driven by man-of-the-match Mako Vunipola, the England prop. Gareth Steenson scored Exeter's only try,

It was a fourth league title in total for Saracens, which lifted English rugby's top club prize in 2011, '15 and '16. The 2016 win came at the expense of Exeter.
