The decision to write a prompt guide which teenagers could access comes in response to recent reports showing that the majority of high school students are using Chat GPT programs to help with schoolwork, explains AI Promptivity. Whilst this has raised alarm bells over the possibility of cheating, reporters for the British Broadcasting Corporation (BBC) found that often students are using the program as a virtual stand-in for their teacher when completing tasks at home.

“High school students are adapting to this new technology faster than anyone,” says an AI Promptivity spokesperson. “If they don’t understand a homework question, they can get GPT-4 to explain it to them in simple terms, have it provide some working examples, and even assess their answers prior to them handing it in - all without any embarrassment or fear of looking stupid in front of teachers or classmates.”

“The technology exists and teenagers are going to use it. So we created this guide to help them get better, more accurate results from their questions and to make them aware of some of the problems interacting with AI presents.”

AI Promptivity’s guide lays out the limitations of GPT-4 in clear terms, encouraging teens to critically assess each answer they receive and check for inaccuracies or inherent biases in the system.

The majority of advice, however, focuses on how to hone the instructions teenagers issue the GPT-4 program. The guide explains how the AI algorithm “thinks” and how best to approach writing a prompt to get the desired result. Techniques such as fine-tuning, monitoring, evaluating, and how to assess data sets are all covered in language that is pitched at teenage machine learning enthusiasts, without any unnecessary jargon.
