As the U.S. continues to struggle with a growing obesity epidemic, the practice's recently announced weight loss program offers patients the support of a GLP-1 receptor agonist, Wegovy. This particular GLP-1 medication works by mimicking the effects of the body's naturally occurring GLP-1 hormone, which uses a three-fold process to promote rapid weight loss. Patients Medical safely starts patients at a dose of around .25mg per week, slowly increasing the dose to around 2.4mg per week, depending on their specific needs and medical history.

With this announcement, Patients Medical offers patients a convenient, relatively low-maintenance treatment option. Wegovy is administered in the clinic as a subcutaneous injection and the treatment typically involves only one injection per week. Patients can schedule their injection appointments for any time during the day.
When compared to similar antidiabetic medications, Wegovy has a relatively minimal risk of causing hypoglycemia, which is a potential side effect of these types of treatments. Patients using Wegovy have experienced an average weight loss of around 12-15% of their initial body weight.
Weight loss from Wegovy is primarily due to its ability to keep patients in a caloric deficit by decreasing appetite and increasing satiety. Throughout the process, Patients Medical does frequent blood testing to ensure patients' healthy kidney function and electrolyte levels.
