Young People Believe Social Media is Picturing the 'Perfect' Image

According to the American Academy of Facial Plastics and Reconstructive Surgery (AAFPRS) 54% of the facial surgeons have seen an increase of cosmetic surgery being performed on individuals under 30. This has been reported to be a significant increase in the last ten years likely due to the ever growing world of social media presenting the 'perfect' image.

A recent AAFPRS survey found that over 40% of surgeons reported that incentives of the young people they saw were to look better in selfies on social media sites such as Instagram and Facebook. Many young people use filters available on these sites to change the way they look. Dr. Cassin of Ryerson's University psychology department states the use of a filter is 'almost like seeing what an idealized version of yourself would look like, and then it seems like a realistic thing to go after to achieve'.

Although AAFPRS is an extremely credible source, they're not the only ones with findings in regards to this topic. Realself is an online information-sharing community, which have results from a survey they conducted supporting the above statistics.

Realself found that nearly half of the participants confirmed that social media had an influence on their choice, with 15.37% answering yes and another 33.40% saying that the images on social media made them more aware of cosmetic surgery as an option.

It's safe to suggest that social media has a serious impact on how people see themselves, causing low self-esteem. This appears to result in an overbearing need to change the way they look to mimic those they see on social media by undertaking cosmetic procedures.
