North Myrtle Beach, S.C. — Tidewater Golf Club hosted the first annual Mentor Cup, a charity event launched by golf media star Kelly Tilghman, welcoming 120 players to one of South Carolina’s premier courses on October 27.
The tournament, which attracted 60 two-person teams, raised money for the Gene’s Dream Foundation, an organization Tilghman helped start to honor the late Gene Weldon, a long-time PGA professional who mentored her en route to a standout playing career at Duke and as a pioneering sports broadcaster.
Gene’s Dream is committed to improving the lives of children through the game of golf.
The inaugural event was one Weldon, whose passion for the game was infectious, would have enjoyed. Each team consisted of an adult and a child (mentor-mentee) playing 18 holes at Tidewater, a layout that has been ranked among America’s Top 100 public courses.
With volunteers from the Tidewater community greeting teams on each tee box, the Mentor Cup was a celebration of the game and its ability to help foster positive character traits in children while having a good time.
“It was an honor to host the inaugural Mentor Cup and help Kelly Tilghman raise money for the Gene’s Dream Foundation,” said Chris Cooper, Tidewater’s general manager. “We enjoyed a great day on the course, and it was the type of event Gene would have loved. We had kids out here laughing and having a good time on the course. Golf needs more days like that.”
The good times of the Mentor Cup didn’t end with the final putt at Tidewater. On the evening of October 27, David Feherty, a close friend of Tilghman, performed a two-hour show at the Myrtle Beach Convention Center leaving a crowd of 1,200 people howling in laughter.
Feherty shared humorous anecdotes from his childhood in Ireland and his life in the game from the European Tour to his time in the broadcast booth.
From the golf course to Feherty’s performance, the Mentor Cup put smiles on a lot of faces.
